Most of the locals know about “Gravity Hill” in Montevideo. It’s a location in town that appears to be going downhill, however, if you put your car in neutral about halfway “down” the hill, your car will begin to roll backwards “up” the hill.

The DNR’s Ortonville Area Fisheries office has recently taken stock of fish species in two of our biggest area waterways, figuratively and literally. “Game fish have done very well in Marsh Lake this year with high numbers of young-ofyear crappies, walleyes, northern pike and white bass noted in our sampling,” says Chris Domeier, MN DNR Ortonville Area Fisheries Supervisor.

Last week my son was able to take leave (basically vacation time in the military) and travel from Fort Drum to his hometown to spend some time with family. After a 10-month deployment to the Middle East, he had a lot of photos and stories about camels and dust storms to share.

Fried green tomatoes is one thing, but under- ripe green tomatoes clinging to the vine as we enter the month of September? Not acceptable! Seems there are two camps in town: one has nice, plump, fiery-red tomatoes; the other, still harden, unripe green orbs clinging steadfast to the plant. What’s going on? Turns out the culprit may be the extreme hot weather we had earlier that put the brakes on some plants moving towards ripeness.

Of all the headlines published when the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 was signed into law by President Biden on August 6th, what made me most curious was what specifically this would mean for Medicare beneficiaries and their pocketbooks. AARP is a non-partisan organization which advocates for lower prescription drug costs so I knew they would have the details I was looking for.

I have a serious problem with controlling myself in regards to the purchasing of old books. It’s the one thing I can never walk past at an auction or estate sale without buying at least one. Additionally, on many of my travels, I have managed to find some dusty, old book store stacked floor to ceiling with piles of books, some dating back to the 1600s (but definitely out of my price range). When I travel by air, I also only ever bring a carry-on bag, no matter how long the trip, so I only can usually bring one of those books home. The book is usually the extent of my souvenir purchase - but I can tell you where every old book in my house came from.
