Montevideo will carry a two-game winning streak into road games at BOLD on Thursday and Central Minnesota Christian Friday. The Thunder Hawks (2-1) will then return home to face Eden Valley-Watkins on Tuesday night -- and have an excellent chance to be 5-1 heading into the Christmas break.

Montevideo girls basketball senior center Avery Koenen exploded for 32 points in a pair of impressive victories last week. The North Dakota State University commit led the Thunder Hawks with 14 points in a 52-47 home win at Minnewaska and 18 in a 54-43 victory at Lac Qui Parie Friday.

Thunder Hawks Varsity girls team 2-0 this season

Last Tuesday, the Thunder Hawk Varsity Girls Basketball team took on Central Minnesota Christian School for a 63-32 win. Leaders in the game included Avery Koenen who scored 28 points with 11 rebounds, and five steals while Tenley Epema added 16 points to the team total with four three-point shots.

Thunder Hawk boys open basketball season at home

Montevideo boy’s basketball coach Derek Webb says his players were disappointed but not deflated following a 76-66 season-opening home loss against nonconference Redwood Valley last Thursday night. “Simply said, at the end of the night Redwood Valley hit their shots and we didn’t capitalize on our chances,” said Webb, whose scrappy Thunder Hawks looked for their first win of the season at Minnewaska on Tuesday night (results not available as this edition went to press).

Defending Section 3AA girls basketball champion Montevideo continues its season-opening, three-game homestand Friday against Atwater- Cosmos-Grove City and Tuesday versus Minnewaska Area. “ACGC played us tough in sections last year and has our attention,” Thunder Hawks coach Anthony Jackson said before Tuesday night’s opener against Central Minnesota Christian.

High-intensity preseason scrimmages last Saturday against Willmar and Canby enhanced Montevideo boy’s basketball coach Derek Webb’s opinion that his team will compete for a West Central championship this season.

Montevideo girls swim team competes

On November 11th and 13th, the Montevideo girls Swim Team traveled to take part in sections. On the 11th, they traveled to Hutchinson for the Section 3A preliminaries.
