David C. Brandon III
David C. Brandon III, 70, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Garden Court Chateau of Grand Rapids after a brief battle with cancer surrounded by his siblings. David was born in Trimont in 1952 to David and Janet Brandon. He began elementary school in Windom and at the age of nine, his family moved to Montevideo, where he graduated in 1971. Music and sports were a big part of his early life. He played the piano and guitar. He joined a local band with his classmates and played keyboards, guitar, and sang. At one point in his early 20’s, he moved to the West Bank, near the University of Minnesota, and attended lessons to further improve on his guitar skills and study classical guitar. David competed on the Montevideo athletic teams in football, wrestling, and track. He enjoyed weightlifting and earned his black belt in karate. During his senior year of high school, he was the co-captain of the football team, class president, and successfully organized a “sit-in” to dismantle the high school dress code. David was a hard worker his entire life. While in school, he worked at Ben Franklin and during the summers he painted houses and provided lawn care. After graduating high school, he attended Grand Rapids Community College, and for a short time, Willmar Community College. It was around this time he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He continued to live in Willmar for several years and eventually moved to Grand Rapids to be near his parents. David, along with his friend Tim, moved in with the Jerry Julien family. His strong work ethic and excellent attendance provided the Grand Rapids ODC with almost 30 years of service. He continued working up until this past December. David’s free time was spent socializing at The Keisler House, bowling in the Special Olympics, attending Lawron Presbyterian Church and spending weekends at his family’s tree farm. David will be remembered by his family as a gentle, quiet soul who enjo

James Fred (Jim) Weckwerth
James Fred (Jim) Weckwerth died suddenly on January 9, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born in Montevideo on July 8, 1948, the second son of Alfred and Freda (Roske) Weckwerth. Jim graduated from Boyd High School and then completed a two-year course in architectural drafting before enlisting in the Navy, where he served briefly until receiving a medical discharge. He spent his career employed as a draftsman and purchasing agent. In July 1969, Jim married Patricia (Pat) Wallace in Watson and together they moved to Redwood Falls, where they designed and built a home and lived for almost 40 years before moving to Coon Rapids. He retired in 2015, celebrated with an Alaskan cruise, and looked forward to winter trips south with Pat. He loved hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Over the years, he made beautiful heirloom furniture for his family and others. He was an avid card player, who was happy spending time in friendly rivalry and complaining about his cards. He loved the challenge of fixing things, and liked helping others with projects, particularly at church. Jim embraced a grumpy-old-man persona, which was authentic, but was matched by a deep sentimental side. With his grand-dog, Olaf, he shared a love of naps and snitching cookies. In 2019, he became a grandfather, a role he treasured. Jim is survived by his wife, Pat; two daughters, Robyn and Wendy; one granddaughter, Aaliyah; his brother, Daniel Weckwerth, and his wife Sandra; brother-in-law, Dale Wallace; five nieces and nephews; and his cousin and close friend Dennis Koepp and his wife, Sheila. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Jay, lost at the age of six months; his parents-in-law, Roger and Gudrun Wallace; his brother-in-law Donald Wallace; his sister-in-law Sharon Wallace; and his nephew Steven Wallace. A memorial service will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Blaine on Friday, January 20, at 11 a.m. with visitation an hour before the service and a light lunch to follow. The
