Jon “Whoopie” Alan Anderson

Jon “Whoopie” Alan Anderson of Granite Falls was called from this life to eternal life on April 15, 2022 after holding on to hope and having faith and a strong will to live.

Jon was born August 30, 1961 in Clarkfield to Orville and MayEllen Anderson. He was baptized and confirmed at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, and attended school at Granite Falls High School, and married Tammy Bergman at Granite Falls Lutheran Church on August 22, 1992. They established their home in Granite where they raised two sons, Jacob and Nicholas. He loved Tammy and his boys unconditionally and unselfishly.

Jon worked for 40+ years in Granite Falls at the Sawmill and the last 33 years with the city of Granite Falls. He always had a way of unselfishly dropping whatever he was doing to come to the aid of others, whether it was to work on a burst water main, plow a road, open a manhole cover and crawl where no other would want to go. He cleaned parks, painted parking lot lines in the late-night hours, drove the pay loader, and marked and readied graves for mourning families. For over 30 years, Jon looked forward to the fall when he drove beet truck for the Knudson family. He had a rapport with his coworkers that allowed him to lead and work together to accomplish much. Many have shared how he was always kind and willing to help others with a reliable intention. His smile, soft spoken character, quick wit, knowledge (gained through first hand experiences), loyalty and concern for everyone else before himself made him a dedicated husband, dad, son, brother, friend, and employee. As his boys approached graduation, his heart ached at the thought of his boys leaving home. He made sure they knew they were welcome to stay; if he had his way, that’s how he wanted it!

Jon was a devoted, loving husband and dad. He was proud of his family and so excited to add daughter-in-law Rachel. Jon loved any chance to spend time with family which was important to him. He would spend hours tinkering under the hood of a vehicle teaching his boys. He enjoyed shooting pool and visiting with buddies. Riding his Harley and a few trips to Sturgis were things he spoke of often. Watching wildlife was an enjoyment he spent hours doing until the last week. He could spot a deer, pheasant, or eagle easily. The binoculars sat on his side table always.

Jon is survived by his wife Tammy, sons Jacob and Nicholas (Rachel), in-laws Ron and Marty Bergman, sister Janell (Jerry) Paulson, brother Jeff of Marshall, and sister Susan (Chad Lerud) Nelson of Echo; sister-in-law Kim (Lance) Whaylen, nephews and nieces Blake (Danielle) Paulson, Sophie, Olivia, Kolby, Bella, and Aubrey Anderson, Dylan and Cody Nelson, Sydney and Colten Lerud; Andrew (Andrea) Anthony, Chad (Brittany), and Benjamin Whaylen, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jon was preceded in death by parents Orville and MaryEllen, grandparents, and extended family. Forever in our hearts you will be, Jon.
