Mildred “Millie” Lanes

Mildred “Millie” Lanes, 99, of Montevideo passed away Monday, September 26, 2022, at the Chippewa County Montevideo Health.
Mildred Rose, the daughter of Carl and Ella (Hemstad) Erickson, was born June 25, 1923, in St. Paul. She was baptized by Rev. Froiland on November 16, 1924, at her grandmother’s house and confirmed on October 24, 1937, at Baxter Lutheran Church. Millie began her education at District #8 in Lac Qui Parle County and attended high school in Montevideo graduating in 1941.
On February 20, 1944, Millie was united in marriage to Lyle Lanes at Baxter Lutheran Church by Rev. Froiland. This union of 64 years was blessed with five children, Mary Lou, Betty, Rose, Dean and June.
Millie and Lyle raised their family on their farm until 1972 when they moved to Montevideo. Millie worked at MTI for multiple years and was an Avon and a Fuller Brush representative for over 25 years. Millie was very active in the community, volunteering in so many ways. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of Ladies’ Aid at Black Oak Lake and later enjoyed being part of Trinity’s Rebecca Circle and Quilter’s Guild. Millie was a 4-H and Farmer’s Union leader, a member of the Chit Chat Homemakers group and part of the hospital auxiliary.
She enjoyed making crafts, reading and most family gatherings were spent playing cards, with Millie seldom on the losing team. After retirement, Lyle and Millie often played Hand & Foot. After Millie moved to Brookside in 2015, she fell in love with playing Dominoes and was money ahead in playing Bingo. In her final week, she was the winner in 3-handed Buck. She enjoyed spending time with family including her grandchildren and extended family.
Millie is survived by her children, Mary Lou Lanes, June (Cecil) Eisenlohr of Montevideo, Betty Funk of New Brighton, Rose (Del) Steiner of Billings, Mont., Dean Lanes of Casa Grande, Ariz.; grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Jorgenson, Jana (Michael) Strasburg, Tonya (Mike) Axford, Matthew Funk, Christa (Jeremy Geary) Benedict, Lori Gulbranson, Darin Lanes, Daniel (Julie) Steiner, Andrea Shrestha; great-grandchildren, Carlee and Kaden Axford, James, Max and Thor Gulbranson, Zachary (Jordyn) and Payton Jorgenson, Emma and Audrey Strasburg, Violet and Barrett Steiner; great-great-grandson, Beckett Jorgenson; sisters, Alice Wehrkamp of Montevideo, Marian Storlien of Dawson; half-sister, Wanda Schwendemann of Montevideo; brother and sister-in-law, George Lanes, Dorothy Lanes.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, in 2008; parents, Carl and Ella; brother, Charles Erickson; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Wehrkamp, Orgean Storlien, Delores Erickson, Earl Lanes, Hazel and Mel Angell, Georgette and Frank Ario, Vivian Lanes.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Black Oak Cemetery, Trinity Church, or your choice.
