As much trouble as we humans have determining how to dress for this weather, think about the plants and animals that don’t have the option of adding or removing layers or going indoors for warmth or to get out of the wind. My, oh my. This “spring” has been enough to test my patience. The thermometer showed 80 degrees Saturday afternoon and this morning when I walked it was under 40. And it’s not supposed to get much warmer all day. Add to that the sprinkles and the ferocious wind. Uff da.

Community Column: Who wins and who loses with CO2 pipelines?

Have you heard about the new pipeline projects being developed in southwest and west central Minnesota? If you haven’t, you’re not alone. Even Minnesotans who live, work, and own land in the communities where these pipelines will cross are just beginning to hear about them in drips and drops—maybe in a brief mention in the local paper or a bullet-point item in the minutes of a county board meeting. Or maybe you’ve heard the rumblings from farmers and communities on the other side of the Minnesota-Iowa border where resistance to these projects is growing.

Memory Care Corner: Expectations

Years ago when I directed a church high school singing group called One Accord, I set high, yet attainable expectations for these young people. My theory was if you didn’t expect much from an individual that might be exactly what they would produce. On the other hand, if you set high, yet attainable expectations, they would work hard to accomplish that goal – and were proud when they did!

Ridgewater to offer Advanced Esthetics certificate

Ridgewater Community & Technical College Practicing estheticians and recent Estheology graduates who meet eligibility requirements will now be able to take their skills to the next level for their skincare clients, thanks to an Estheology program expansion at Ridgewater College, Willmar campus. Launching this summer, a 20-credit Advanced Esthetics certificate will be available to licensed estheticians and cosmetologists who wish to expand their expertise to such skin treatments as light therapy, dermaplaning, and other advanced skin treatment protocols.

Montevideo High School students inducted into National Honor Society

On Monday evening, the Montevideo High School hosted a ceremony to induct new students to the National Honor Society. Paywall to launch soon on Montevideo American-News website

The Montevideo American News’s new website launched on March 1st. The e-edition paywall was currently down as a part of the transition, but once it is re-established, current digital subscribers will need to sign in again and reset their passwords as the Montevideo American News has transitioned from former owner, Gannett to new owner, CherryRoad Media. The Montevideo American News website paywall will launch on May 3rd.

Presentation on WPA program given at Minnesota’s Machinery Museum annual meeting

Minnesota photographer Doug Ohman was at the Minnesota’s Machinery Museum annual meeting in Hanley Falls last week to provide a presentation titled “The New Deal”. The presentation was of interest, as the school building that now houses the museum was originally constructed as a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects.

Community Center provides activities, fellowship

On Wednesday, May 4th, the members of the Montevideo Community Center are hosting an Open House Meet & Greet with the hope of showing off all the Community Center has to offer. The Community Center, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic had around 250 members.
