PRAIRIE NOTEBOOK

The saddest and most tragic thing about last week’s severe storm was the lives that were lost. In some regards, Ma Nature spared us even more devastation, but what she dealt was bad enough.

From the Editor’s Desk

I’m a list maker. Every surface of my desks is covered in lists, the notes app in my phone has seven or eight lists going at any time, there’s lists in notes on my laptop, and even sometimes, lists are written in ink on the steering wheel of my car (yes, this drives my husband nuts). It also drives my sister nuts that I don’t consolidate all lists onto the notes app on my phone, where I could keep my life more in order. She fails to recognize that this chaotic collection of lists IS my version of organized.

U of M offers planting decision advice

Many farmers are concerned about the cool spring weather and cold soil temperatures. Usually, farmers have started planting by now. Hopefully, the weather will warm up and planting will progress. Farmers have started to discuss prevented planting. As the planting season goes on, farmers will have to decide whether to plant or not to plant. Final planting dates for corn producers are May 25 (northern Minnesota) and May 31 (southern Minnesota). June 10 is the final planting date for soybeans for the whole state. If you decide not to plant, there is a formula to use to determine your prevented planting rate. There is a simple payment rate of $5.90 multiplied by your APH and your insured percentage multiplied by 55% to get your prevented planting rate for corn. For example, 85% coverage is $5.90 *180 bushels (APH)*.85 *.55= $496.49 per acre payment less premium. For soybeans: $14.33*50 bushels (APH)*.85 *.60=$365.42 per acre payment less premium.

Faith Column: Challenge and Comfort

All throughout the Bible we see God challenging people to be better, to do right by their neighbors, to be more generous, more forgiving, more kind. In these many many stories, we see a similar pattern: we humans are shown to easily become greedy, meanspirited, selfish, cruel, or even just confused, scared, and lost, leading to all sorts of bad decisions, all sorts of harm to self, others, and God’s good creation. God challenges us to do better, and we need it! Limits on our greed, on our ability to harm others, helps everyone together to lead fuller happier lives – and it also helps us to live a fuller happier life ourselves!

THEIR LOVE STORY

A serial is a publishing format that breaks down a larger work of narration into sequential installments for publication in magazines or newspapers. Serials were popular in the late 1800s, and early 1900s, and even appeared in the Montevideo American News in the 1920s. This is the fourth week of a six-week series of serials written by author and Montevideo native Arthur Norby.
