Students experience volunteering through Kids in the Community Day

Last week, students at Montevideo Schools participated in the 12th annual Kids in the Community day. For the annual event, students participate in service projects around the community. This year’s projects included cleaning up at CCM Health, the Montevideo Fire Department, United Methodist Church, Sunset Cemetery, behind Main Street, Pioneer (Heritage) Village, Smith Park, and the Chippewa County Courthouse. Montevideo Middle School principal Shawn Huntley says, “It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn the importance of service (volunteer) projects. This is our way of saying thank you to our community for all of the support we receive during the school year. Photos by Jessica Stolen-Jacobson

From the Editor’s Desk

Whenever I have the opportunity to look through the newspaper’s archive books, I’m more than happy to spend hours leafing through the pages. While leafing through the Advocate Tribune archives I’ve come across classmates and photographs from my years at Yellow Medicine East. There’s even a photograph of me in the fifth grade at the school’s spelling bee.

New restaurant to open soon in Montevideo

In 1998, Rafael Nunez and his wife Natalia Hernandez immigrated to Minnesota from Mexico, in search of a better life. They left their home with only $100 and a backpack each. Now, the couple is about to open their third restaurant, the second in Montevideo. The couple opened their first business, a small store on Highway 7 in Montevideo, which was open for three years before they moved to the downtown location, La Plazita, which opened nine years ago. La Plazita started as groery store, then later on, Nunez and Hernandez added the kitchen and a small restaurant in the back. Awhile later, they opened a second restaurant in Appleton, finding success in sharing their Mexican food with the community.
