Our own hidden landscape
I just returned from two weeks in the Columbia Gorge region along the Washington/Oregon border. The deep basaltic canyons and towering buttresses above the river, the lushness of the high meadows and the vistas to distant snow-capped volcanic peaks all left me in awe at such incredible landscapes. The geology of a region speaks of its formation in both subtle and grandiose ways.

Ag Plus Cooperative invests in United Way of Southwest Minnesota
United Way of Southwest Minnesota Ag Plus Cooperative staff held their second annual soup/chili cook-off over three days’ time in their Canby, Ghent and Marshall locations to benefit United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN). This year’s options included wild rice soup, cheeseburger soup, chili and grilled cheese sandwiches, or Irish stew.

High School Rodeo held in Granite Falls
The Minnesota High School Rodeo Association held their Region Four Rodeo at Lee Mar Ranch Saturday and Sunday. The Region Four Rodeo featured junior high and high school students from around the state, including Wood Lake and Montevideo riders. Events included barrel racing, bull riding, steer wrestling, chute dogging, calf roping, breakaway roping, and more.

Easter Egg-citement held after three-week delay
The Montevideo Area Chamber of Commerce was able to host the annual Easter Egg-citement easter egg hunt event on Saturday after three weeks of rain, and cold weather delayed the festivities. Children of all ages gathered at Smith Park for their chance to find eggs filled with candy or one of seven golden eggs that would award them a gift basket. Gift baskets, as well as the candy in the eggs were donated by area businesses and organizations.

Honor Concert held at MHS
The Montevideo High School Choirs annual Honors Concert was held Monday evening in the Montevideo High School Gym. This year’s concert featured the theme “One World, One Music”. This Honors Concert will be the last under the direction of Dan Hampton, as he retires this year. Hampton wrote in the event program, “It is a difficult thing this year for me to have to say goodbye not only to all of the seniors, but to all of the students as I retire from teaching here in Montevideo. It has been my greatest joy making music with these students and watching them grow.”
Free family-focused webinars May through August
University of Minnesota Extension University of Minnesota Extension Center for Family Development educators and partners are facilitating webinars, providing information and resources for families and those who serve families to make informed decisions leading to greater health, resilience, and well-being. All webinars are virtual and free.
Minnesota State University Moorhead announcees graduates
Minnesota State University Moorhead Minnesota State University Moorhead will award degrees to more than 800 students during its spring commencement program Friday, May 13 in the university’s Nemzek Fieldhouse. This includes more than 185 graduate students and nearly 30 past graduates who are now participating in the live commencement.
Lac qui Parle Museum open house planned
Lac qui Parle Historical Society The Museum spring pancake brunch and open house will be May 22, 2022. Fresh hot blueberry and plain pancakes, fruit, sausage, coffee and juice will be served at the Madison VFW from 10:30 a.m.
