Fun in the Sun kits available for young children

United Way of Southwest Minnesota They’re back!! Fun in the Sun Kits were so popular last year that United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) is excited to announce they’re here again! The goal of these kits is to provide a starting point for family activities that are fun, educational and engaging throughout the summer. These kits are a gift from UWSWMN to families in our service area that have young children and are distributed through local libraries.

Their Love Story

A serial is a publishing format that breaks down a larger work of narration into sequential installments for publication in magazines or newspapers. Serials were popular in the late 1800s, and early 1900s, and even appeared in the Montevideo American News in the 1920s. This is the fifth week of a six-week series of serials written by author and Montevideo native Arthur Norby.

News from Milan

Because of Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, I need to write my column Wednesday. Although it has been a busy week already for me, my doings aren’t necessarily newsworthy.

Caterpillars to butterflies . . .

2022 Seniors . . . Well, here you are about to graduate. I’m sure you’re pinching yourself at the prospect of reaching your goal of the last 12 years. I think of you all as caterpillars. You’re about to leave your cocoons; your high school and homes, to emerge as butterflies and fly away to your futures. Please know that every teacher you ever had is bursting with pride at your accomplishment. They will follow your ups and downs through life. Every time your picture appears in the paper, they will say, “There’s my former student.” You will always be their kids.

Live Well, Age Wisely: Our Agrarian Culture

The second week of March 2020 stands out in my memory for two reasons. I presented at a regional conference in Marshall mid-week and remember how we were encouraged to not shake hands. By Friday, the governor had declared a state of emergency in Minnesota, and I’ll never forget the feeling of uncertainty that followed. I don’t enjoy reminiscing on those days! The conference, however, was a bright spot.
