Chippewa County Burnout Competition awards big prizes

The annual Chippewa County Burnout Competition was held Wednesday evening, with big prizes for those signing up for spots on the time board. Time slots could be purchased on a board for the best guess at how long the two vehicles used in the Explosa-Palooza contest would last before they blew up. The event was a friendly competition between the Montevideo Police Department (whose car ran for one minute, eight seconds) and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department (whose car ran for one minute, three seconds). The two correct guesses at run times received $1,555 each. The winnersrs were Dereck Olson, and Lynette Ray.

“Dog Days” of summer have arrived

We have had some warm temperatures over the past week. The warm and humid air mass helped to fire off some showers and thunderstorms on Sunday morning and then again Sunday afternoon and evening. Some of these cells were on the strong to severe side across central Minnesota. They also produced some large hail.

GUESS WHO?

Each week, the Montevideo American News will share a photograph from our archives for you to “guess who”. To submit your guesses, send us a message by email to jstolen-jacobson@cherryroad.com or message our Facebook page. We will publish the answers the next week.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

A note from Myrna: These recipes are from World War II. Sugar was rationed - every family got tokens you used to get sugar, and you also had to pay for the sugar. When you used up the tokens, you couldn’t buy any more until the next month, so people would use corn syrup or honey to bake and can.

We have had a wonderful week of coolish weather, but now it looks like we’re back in the oven for the next couple of weeks. We need to heat for the crops, but we sure could use some moisture. I guess the order I put in got lost in the mail.
