Vandalism appears through public areas of town
Recently, numerous incidents of vandalism by way of spray paint have appeared throughout the Montevideo community, with much of it appearing on some of the community’s historic buildings located in Smith Park, in the business district, and on bridges including the historic WPAbridge.

Autumn Experience Series: Holmberg Orchard
The first noticeable thing when walking into the Holmberg Orchard is all the detail of the homemade signs placed frequently throughout the property. Little ones may head straight for the barrel train or perhaps they’ll run straight for the pumpkin patch or the corn maze that is much trickier to make it through than one would think (try counting all of the silly scarecrows that are sprinkled throughout the maze). There are several outdoor games for kiddos to play, several photo opportunities are set up throughout the property, and there is the onsite store that sells food, home goods, clothing, and a variety of boutique items. Rosie Petty, half of the couple that now owns and operates the orchard, said, “Seeing the families in the fall, just having fun and the kids just enjoying being outside. We try to make it very family friendly, very family orientated and things for everyone to enjoy.”

“Jesus is Our Shepherd-King”
Jesus is our Shepherd-King who searches for lost sheep – sheep like us – searches for us to bring us home. Is there a more comforting truth in all of Scripture? When we were lost in sin, the God of all wisdom and power – who had reason to shun us forever – came searching for us instead. Do you see what that means? You are no cosmic accident. You are not a lucky soul who just happened to find yourself in the family of God. Luck had nothing to do with it. The Lord, with a love we haven’t earned, came searching for us because He wants us to belong to Him and to live with Him in Heaven!

Beyond Reason
The 90s Decades are like snowflakes. They’re white and pointy, and all a little different.

From the Editor’s Desk
As we near the best season of all (fall), I find myself wanting to spend more time outdoors and exploring before we lose the chance to winter. So when I had a day off over the weekend and realized that it was going to be my only day off until Christmas with all of the photography sessions booked, the season’s sports, council and school board meetings, etc, etc, I thought it would be the perfect time to take my youngest child on her first trip to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. I’m not a big fan of the event, but I do believe it’s something everyone should experience at least once. Mostly it’s about the people watching, and all of the costumes, and acting that happens throughout the event.

Prairie Notebook
In gathering info for another writing project, I compiled a list of interesting “nature notes” about whitetail deer: As we approach the changing colors of autumn, the deer are changing colors, too. The reds of their reddish-brown summer coats are turning gray - this color change is due to the change in their exposure to sunlight (I would think the duller winter colors of their surroundings would cause the change as well).
September is Emergency Preparedness Month:
September is Emergency Preparedness month. While many of the emergencies in our area are likely to be weather related, there are countless possible disasters that could happen at any time.

News from Milan
Good morning, world. It’s another beautiful day. Aren’t they all beautiful that we can wake up and enjoy the day? I have decided to take a more positive attitude towards life and the changing of seasons. The colors of autumn are starting to change our color palette. The reds and oranges and yes the browns among all the greens add to the beauty of the day. My mountain ash trees aren’t as full of berries as previous years. I may have to do a little more whispering into their leaves come next spring. “Berries or firewood.” It has worked before. The birds that were so busy at my feeders all summer must have gone south. And the ones that usually grace me with their presence haven’t arrived. I didn’t get the memo telling me when they will be here, but I miss birdsong and the joy of seeing them jostling one another to get a better shot at the food. Fields of beans are ripening and losing leaves. The edible beans have already been combined and soybeans can’t be far behind. Corn is hardening. It’s time to raid the field for cornstalks for fall decorating. I always have good intentions and then never get around to actually doing the decorating. I guess I will just be the admirer.
