Andrews makes All-Conference team

Last week, the Montevideo boys and girls Cross Country teams traveled to the Minnewaska Golf Club in Glenwood for the Minnewaska Invite. The boys team claimed the fifth-place spot with a score of 141. Complete scoring follows: Boys Individual Top five: (14) Brady Andrews 18:16.7; (23) Carson Lynner 19:04.1; (26) Blake Andrews 19:24.0; (31) Nelson Velasquez 19:46.8; (48) Ethan Andresen 20:59.1.

Food shelf fundraising concert at Hawk Creek Lutheran

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of Cindy Martinson, will present a fundraising concert to benefit the Neighbors United Resource Center Food Shelf. Titled “A Celebration of Life”, this program of uplifting choral and orchestral music will include a variety of pieces, ranging from “Joyful, Joyful” from the film Sister Act Two, to the acclaimed “Indodana”, along with “Swing Low/ Swing Down Chariot” by the men singers, “Arise my Soul, Arise” by the women, the first movement of Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo”, Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and more.

Mild temps ahead for the weekend

My wife and I made a trip up north to see Michael Bolton at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs in Onamia on Saturday. We witnessed all the fall colors along the way. Some areas were very vibrant still, but other areas have seen their peak for the season.

Community invited to attend listening sessions on school facilities

On Thursday, October 20th and Friday, October 21st, the Montevideo School District is hosting listening sessions titled “Stop, Look and Listen”. The first, on Thursday will be held at the Montevideo High School at 6 p.m., and Friday’s session will be held at the Montevideo Community Center at 10 a.m.

Heikes to retire from Folkestad Furniture after 42 years

Gary Heikes has been in the furniture business with Folkestad Furniture, a business handed down through his wife’s family, for 42 years, and will soon be retiring. Heikes doesn’t have an official date set for his retirement, as he plans to hang around for as long as is needed when the business is purchased by a new owner. “I’ll be probably sticking around for a couple of days a week. With all of the things that are going on as far as the store goes, it’s hard to tell,” he says. He hopes to begin the process by mid-winter.

Levee project a topic of discussion yet again at Council meeting

At Monday evening’s meeting of the Montevideo City Council, the Levee project was again a topic of discussion, as a request was put before the council to approve additional funding for the project in the amount of $300,000. A representative from the Army Corps of Engineers, the engineer in charge of the project, was at the meeting to answer questions, as well as to express the Army Corps of Engineers’ frustration with the length of time the project has taken - a frustration shared by the council, and City staff.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Thursday, October 20th: The Montevideo School District is holding a Community Partnered Long Term Facility Plan listening session. The community is invited to learn more about the planning work to date and ask any questions about the community survey hitting mailboxes soon. The event is to be held in the Montevideo High School beginning at 6 p.m.

Montevideo Swim and Dive team takes part in championship

Last Thursday, the Montevideo Girls Varsity Swim and Dive team traveled to Willmar for the Section 3A True Team girls swimming and diving championship. Elizabeth O’Malley scored an eighth place finish in diving with a score of 281.80. Lauren Dove scored the 22nd place in the 200 Individual Medley with a score of 2:40.86.
