Oh, what a beautiful morning. There was a little wind from the northwest, but not enough to ruin the morning walk. I was a little nervous with the light dusting of snow on top of whatever ice was left on the streets. But neither the dog, nor I, fell.

Lions Club makes donation of school supplies
The Montevideo Lions Club donated school supplies for the service project at the Lions 5M4 Mid-Winter Convention at Arrowwood in Alexandria this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday afternoon, Lions from West Central MN packed boxes of needed items requested from teachers and area schools. The boxes were given to Lions members and all 52 clubs in the district to distribute to their local schools. Some items included area: Kleenex, scissors, glue, tape, zip crayons, markers lock bags, card stock/construction paper. Applications open for Growing Local: Emerging Leaders program in southwest Minnesota
HUTCHINSON, Minn.— Aspiring leaders looking for guidance on their leadership journey are invited to apply to be part of the Growing Local: Emerging Leaders cohort. This program supports emerging leaders in southwest Minnesota and is a partnership between Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) and University of Minnesota Extension. Applications are open through Feb. 17 at swifoundation. org. There is no charge to participate.

Pheasant feeding discouraged despite snowy winter
Animal-loving Minnesotans who leave corn for hungry pheasants at this time of year could be doing more harm than good, say wildlife experts with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. DNR wildlife managers have seen corn spread along roadsides, likely to help ringneck pheasants survive a difficult Minnesota winter.

Efforts to build new playground in small community brings creative ideas
Hazel Run resident Melissa Stevens wanted to see the park in her community improved, and decided to take action on the idea, approaching the Hazel Run City Council last summer to find out what could be done to provide a safer, fun playground for area kids. The council agreed, with the existing park being older, and located in an area where kids would have to cross a busy road, and next to an abandoned elevator. Thus, a decision was made that not only a new location for the park would be sought out, but that new playground equipment would also be found.

Thunder Hawk girls defeat BOLD
Last week, the Thunder Hawk girls varsity basketball team took on New London-Spicer for a 29-64 loss. Leaders in the game included Avery Koenen, scoring 17 points, while Tenley Epema added another nine points to the team total.
