MHS Band Carnival returns as in-person event
The 2023 Montevideo Band Carnival returned Saturday as an in-person event for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. There were a myriad of games to play for prizes, a “jail” where tickets were used to put friends and family (and even yourself) into, a cake walk the band played music for that gave away several cakes, other food, and this year they had bingo as well. Over one hundred cakes were donated for the cake walk by local families. Over 80 items for the silent auction were donated by local organizations and businesses to help with the fundraising cause. All proceeds from the event are used to support the Montevideo Schools band programs so that every student has the opportunity to participate in band. In previous years funds have been used to purchase drumline harnesses, music stands, sound systems, music from current composers, payment for guest directors and much more. The carnival also helps the band program keep the rental prices low, and absorbs repair costs. This year the funds are helping the band purchase an enclosed trailer and new uniform for the marching band. The final tally for funds raised at this year’s band carnival as of Monday was between $9,000-$12,000. There were close to 5,000 tickets sold from all games, bounce houses and the cake walk.

Locals weigh in on the lefse debate
Reporter cchristians@cherryroad. com Lefse! Whether it’s one of the tastiest morsels of food to ever hit your mouth or you can’t stop wondering why people eat it at all, lefse is a tradition here in the Midwest. With three different types of lefse to choose from, there is Tynnlefse (thin lefse) which is traditionally rolled with sugar, cinnamon, and butter inside; there is Potelefse (potato lefse) which is the same as Tynnlefse, except it’s made with 100% potatoes or a mix of wheat flour and potatoes; and then there is Tykkelefse (thick lefse) which is often served as cake with coffee.
