March 2023

From the Editor’s Desk

You know how sometimes you think you’re going to do just a quick, little project and then it turns into something that consumes your entire day? That happens to me a lot in my house. So on Sunday morning, when I realized I had no photo sessions scheduled for the first Sunday in many months, and no events to cover for the newspaper or last minute interviews scheduled for the weekend, I decided I could get a couple of small projects done around the house that were desperately needed.

RECIPE

OF THE WEEK A note from Myrna: This is good and quick with no flour mess. Mix & Press Crust 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup shortening 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon cold water Place all in a small mixer bowl and beat on low speed just until particles are fine.

Montevideo Arts & Event News

Last week I announced that I’m on the hunt for fine artists in Montevideo. What is the difference between fine artists and crafters? Imagine someone who is skilled at portraiture or sculpture and then imagine someone who stencils fun decorations on weathered barn wood or creates dried flower arrangements.

Notes from United Way

The great Hotdish/casserole debate. It is a Midwestern story as old as time.

Live Well, Age Wisely

I will share a secret with you – I get a little nervous when I sit down to write this! Each column presents an opportunity to share resources or ideas to help make life easier and I want to be sure I’m making the most of it. When I’m looking ahead at my calendar and see there is one due soon, I say a little prayer for guidance.

News from Milan

The sun is shining so bright that it’s difficult to keep your eyes open when you step out the door. But then the wind hits you and you realize that it’s still winter. Yup. The season that keeps on giving. And giving. There’s still one week of state basketball so we can expect one more snow incident. The forecast talks about rain and temps in the high 30s, but I am skeptical.

Mark Lange, 64, of Montevideo passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2 p.m.

Thomas Johnson, formerly of Milan, passed away on March 1, 2023, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall at the age of 95. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 30, 2023, at 2 p.m.

Winter has taken a toll on County Highway equipment

At Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners, County Highway Department Engineer Jeremy Gilb was in attendance to give a report on recent projects. In his report, Gilb noted that last week’s snow event proved challenging for the highway department’s equipment.
