MPCA reviews proposal to develop new 4,800-head swine feedlot in Yellow Medicine County
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) today released its environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) for a new swine feedlot in Yellow Medicine County. Luke and Melissa Stevens plan to house 4,800 heads of grow-finish or weanto- finish swine near the town of Hazel Run, on land currently used for row-crop agriculture and surrounded by small residential farms.
Effects of winterkill showing on some southern Minnesota lakes
As ice comes off southern Minnesota lakes, evidence of this year’s harsh winter is washing up along the shorelines on some shallow lakes. While dead and dying fish washing ashore in spring can be discouraging to see, it’s the result of a process called “winterkill,” according to biologists with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

USDA announces sign-up for cost-share assistance for on-farm grain storage due to severe storms
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that producers in counties affected by eligible disaster events in Kentucky, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, and Tennessee can apply for cost-share assistance through the Emergency Grain Storage Facility Assistance Program (EGSFP). The new program provides cost-share assistance for the construction of new grain storage capacity and drying and handling needs, in order to support the orderly marketing of commodities. An initial allocation of $20 million in cost-share assistance is available to agricultural producers in affected counties impacted by the damage to or destruction of large commercial grain elevators as a result of natural disasters from Dec. 1, 2021, to Aug. 1, 2022. The application period opens later this month and closes Dec. 29, 2023.
55+ driver discount program offered
The Minnesota Highway Safety Center will be offering 55+ Driver Discount Courses on April 20th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Granite Falls Senior Center and April 26th 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Montevideo Community Center. Both are four-hour refresher courses.
