Minnesota DNR fisheries rulemaking proposals open for public comment
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public to comment on proposed rules about fishing methods that, if adopted, would go into effect in March 2026.
Students complete “Life Lessons” program
Last week, Montevideo Middle Schoolers in the fifth grade wrapped up their “Life Lessons” unit with Officer Milo. For the last 10 weeks, Officer Milo has been teaching the students about bullying, making good choices, and being kind. At the end of the unit, the students celebrated with a “Life Lessons” graduation party. Each student received a t-shirt to take home.
Speech Team begins season
The Montevideo Speech Team started their season last Saturday at the Luverne Cardinal Speech Invitational. Valeria Turcios and Alex Fultz were the champions in Duo Interpretation.

Reidinger surpasses 1,000 points
Montevideo Boys Basketball Senior Gannon Reidinger (#13) surpassed 1,000 career High School Points in last week’s game against Sauk Centre.
Gold Dusters are headed to state tournament
Over the weekend, the Section 3A Dance tournament was held in Montevideo with 11 teams competing. The Gold Dusters scored 3rd place in the Jazz Division with sixteen points, and third place in the High Kick division with 15 points to earn a spot in the State Class A High Kick and Jazz tournaments. The state jazz tournament takes place on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Minneapolis Target Center, while the high kick tournament takes place Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the same location.

Moving out of an apartment as I’ve been doing recently convinces me at last to resign from American consumer culture and live with only bedding, one towel, two changes of clothing, a pair of shoes, and one suit to wear for shows and also to be buried in. Stationery, stamps, and a couple pens. I own 21 coffee cups; I only need one. Nothing plastic, thank you. I will still fly Delta but I’ll lose 25 pounds to lessen the load.
Montevideo School board hears updates on grant applications, course offering process
At Monday evenings meeting of the Montevideo School District’s Board of Education, Superintendent Wade McKittrick gave a report to the board, noting that the district has submitted two significant grant opportunities to the Minnesota Department of Education in the last week. The first opportunity is for a MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) grant that would provide $180,000 to cover expenses while the district continued to build its MTSS system. The second grant, an ADSIS grant, would allow the district to renew two behavior interventionist positions that are currently being funded through ADSIS funds, and ad a SEL interventionist in the elementary, as well as a math interventionist in the middle school. The application is for approximately $120,000 to cover wage and benefits for those positions.
Let’s Talk Crops: Session talks soybean modeling to help farmers make better decisions
On January 29, Seth Naeve, University of Minnesota Extension soybean agronomist and Anibal Cerrudo, a visiting professor for the last 3 years in the Naeve lab joined UMN Extension crops educator Angie Peltier for a discussion about how using crop modeling can help soybean producers in Minnesota gain important insights into how their management choice could impact yield. This was the fourth weekly episode of the 2025 Strategic Farming: Let’s talk crops! webinars. The series runs through March.
New organization in Montevideo looks to provide access to essentials
Two community members with a shared vision recently opened a new opportunity for those in need to have access to essential hygiene and cleaning products. The idea began in October when Angie Kveene asked a question on social media about whether there was any kind of organization that offered this specific access in Montevideo. “The food shelf has food and some other things but there’s not really a place you can go to just get hygiene and cleaning essentials,” says Kveene.
