City Council approves budget items
At last week’s meeting of the Montevideo City Council, one of the topics of discussion was a permit request made by Rebecca Daly of Java River Coffee Shop for a temporary on-sale license for an outdoor event tied to the Meander Art Crawl. “It’s a huge main event. It was really quite successful last year so we’re super excited to have it again,” said Daly, referencing the Meander Opening Night event hosted by the Montevideo Creatives organization. Daly noted that last year’s event drew over 150 people. This year’s event, the Monte Meet-Up will be held Friday, October 3rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Java River and will feature live music with Clark Machtemes of Traveled Ground and friends, a free community meal catered by Java River featuring local foods, and a farmer’s market and sidewalk chalk. The council unanimously approved the license.

From the Editor’s Desk
Last Wednesday, I took part in a panel discussion in front of a room full of people at Pie, Place and Possibility: Rural Assembly Everywhere Gathering and Watch Party that began at The YES! House in Granite Falls, and ended at Bluenose Gopher Public House to do something I’ve dreaded for weeks - talking in front of people. In actuality, there’s been, recently, more times than I can count on one hand that I’ve been engaged in public speaking.

“Give thanks in all circumstances…” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18a
I have referred to my recovery from alcoholism many times in my writing. One of the things I’ve learned in recovery is that being grateful can change how I feel—when things are good, they are better when I am grateful, and when things go wrong, it isn’t as painful when I am grateful for other things. Being grateful can give me a different outlook on what is happening around me. Even as people of faith, sometimes it is hard to imagine all that we have are blessings from God. It’s so easy to forget to be grateful for the little things, and even for the big things, and sometimes for the things we don’t have. I have learned that when I am grateful, I look more at what I have than what I don’t have. It’s often talked about as being an attitude of abundance.
