City of Montevideo receives DEED grant

Last week, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced 31 cities, townships and counties across Greater Minnesota will receive nearly $21 million in Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) grants.

Thirty-seven organizations across Minnesota will use $4.4 million in state grant funds to support creativity and innovation as they assist people suffering from dementia-related illness.Increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are the focus of the competitive grants administered by the Minnesota Board on Aging.“We celebrate the wonderful ideas offered by these grant applicants,” said Maureen Schneider, chair of the Minnesota Board on Aging.

Check for invasive species when removing docks, equipment for seasonal storage

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds lake property owners to carefully check boats and trailers, docks and lifts, and all other water-related equipment for invasive species when removing equipment for seasonal storage.Several zebra mussel confirmations in recent years were initially reported by property owners and lake service providers removing docks, boats and boat lifts.“This is a good time of year for people to check for invasive species when taking equipment out of the water, because animals like zebra mussels attach to surfaces like docks, lifts and boat hulls that have been in the water over the summer,” DNR Invasive Species Unit Supervisor Kelly Pennington said.Whether pulling equipment directly onto shore for the winter or transporting it on the road to a storage location, it is important for equipment owners to take steps to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.Remember to:•Keep docks and boat lifts out of the water for at least 21 days before putting them into another body of water.

As fall approaches more quickly than one would perhaps like, the calendar fills up at an alarming rate with sporting events, activities, school happenings, meetings regarding fall and winter events that happen in the local area, and of course, election related happenings.This year for the first time in perhaps a great many years, the newspaper is working on hosting a candidates forum in Granite Falls for local mayor and council candidates.

Suspect identified in SWAT standoff

Last week, in a press release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the suspect involved in a police standoff with SWAT in rural Clarkfield, was identified as Kasey Paul Willander, age 27 of Clarkfield.Willander received gunshot wounds during the standoff, and is, according to the press release, hospitalized in stable condition at HCMC.
