I salute the Hollywood writers who went out on strike this past week but I can tell you that we essayists won’t be joining them. For one thing, the essay is deeply imbedded in our nation’s very identity (U.S.A.) but for another thing, a national essay strike would be like a National Husbands Day of Silence, most wives wouldn’t care and many wouldn’t notice.

Since its inception in 2002, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, along with the DNR and Explore Minnesota, has been an organizing partner of the Governor’s Deer Opener. While this is a great event, designed to celebrate the pastime that we all love and cherish, MDHA will not be participating this year. In a unanimous decision, our Executive Board voted not to support this year’s Governor’s Opener due to continued attempts to ban wolf hunting and anti-gun legislation within the state, which are in direct opposition to our mission.

Oh my. Birds, birds, birds. And I love it. To the south of my living room are the sunflower seed feeders. To the north of the living room is the jelly dish which hangs close by the weed elm tree. There are about a dozen orioles of both orchard and Baltimore species and both sexes. To the south are dozens of goldfinches of both sexes. Beauty in either direction. I love it.

Question: How’s the paper been doing since CherryRoad Media took over? Jessica: Since CherryRoad took over we’ve been working on a bunch of things – big and small – to bring our content even more local, to improve the look of the paper overall, and to come up with innovative ways to bring the news to people in more ways than ever before. Having a hyper-local focus starting at the top and working its way through all areas of the newspaper’s operations has been spurring creativity among all our staff.

Live Well, Age Wisely
I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was growing up. You would read part of a chapter and then you’d have to make a decision, each of which would send you to a different page in the book.
