Audrey Arner of Montevideo prefers to think of helping as an opportunity to think about what we want our community to be like. “There’s been points at which some people have convened to talk about a vision for Montevideo, meaning what we want it to be like, not next year, not three years from now, but in the long term. If you think about that, what’s called for is everybody putting their shoulder into it,” she says.

Koenen chosen in top 40 girls basketball players in the state

Montevideo High School Senior Avery Koenen was recently announced as one of the top 40 girls basketball players in the state by the Minnesota Girls Basketball All-Star Series. Koenen will be leading a free youth girls basketball clinic that will be held for girls in grades K-4 in Richfield on April 8th. Avery will play in the all-star series game later that day.

I talked to a friend last week whose Lutheran church in Minneapolis is trying to attract people of color. Lutherans have been white for centuries, coming as they did from Scandinavia and Germany, countries that were never great colonial powers and didn’t grab big chunks of Africa and Lutheranize the indigenous people.

Celebration of all things Irish in downtown

Java River held an open mic night on Friday, March 17th on St. Patty’s Day. The event was originally to take place after the Chamber of Commerce’s annual St. Patty’s Day parade downtown, however the parade was canceled due to the weather. Despite the lingering winter causing below zero wind chills, and heavy snow just prior to the day, there was a large turn-out of people that visited the venue to sing and play music to celebrate the event.

School Board addresses roof issue, calendar changes

At last week’s meeting of the Montevideo School Board, the board was finally able to make a motion to accept a bid on replacement of the Middle School roof. The roof’s need for repairs has been a topic of discussion for awhile, as the summer storms in 2022 caused significant damage.

Time to buy new hunting, fishing licenses

It’s the time of year when anglers and hunters need to buy new fishing and hunting licenses. Minnesota fishing, hunting and trapping licenses for 2022 expire Tuesday, Feb. 28. Licenses for 2023 are now available wherever fishing and hunting licenses are sold, online (mndnr.gov/buy license) and by telephone at 888-6654236. Mobile buyers receive a text or email that serves as proof of a valid fish or game license to state conservation officers.

You know how sometimes you think you’re going to do just a quick, little project and then it turns into something that consumes your entire day? That happens to me a lot in my house. So on Sunday morning, when I realized I had no photo sessions scheduled for the first Sunday in many months, and no events to cover for the newspaper or last minute interviews scheduled for the weekend, I decided I could get a couple of small projects done around the house that were desperately needed.
