Kids in the Community day provides service to local public spaces

Last week, Montevideo Middle School held its annual “Kids In The Community” event. Students and staff of Montevideo Middle School came together to make a positive impact on their community. They spent the morning cleaning up and beautifying areas throughout town. It was a way for the students to learn firsthand about the importance of teamwork and taking care of their environment. Students and staff formed groups and dispersed throughout the community. They spent all morning cleaning up trash, branches, cleaning, raking & pulling weeds. A few of the places they visited were Chippewa City, Swenson Farm, area churches, main street, Smith Park, Heritage Hill, VA home, CCMH, Luther Haven & Brookside.

Last week, the Montevideo Boys Varsity Baseball team took on New London-Spicer for a 3-2 victory. Leaders in the game included Griffin Epema who was 2-for-3 with a run. Complete scoring follows:

Montevideo Softball takes on Sauk Centre, Benson

Last week, the Montevideo Girls Varsity Softball team played a double-header against Sauk Centre, taking a 2-3 loss in game one. Leaders in that game included Emmary Birhanzl, who struck out ten and walked five at the pitching mound. Complete scoring follows:

New SBA HUBZone designation expands contracting opportunities for small businesses in Minnesota

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently approved a Governor-designated request from the State of Minnesota to expand SBA’s HUBZone program to cover the entirety of Otter Tail County and certain Census tracts in the counties of Becker, Carlton, Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs, and Roseau. This designation enables small businesses in high-unemployment, low-income areas to get HUBZone certified and be eligible for special set-aside federal government contracts.

Enjoy state parks this Memorial Day weekend

In preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is highlighting recreation opportunities across the state park, recreation area and trail system.

Chicks have hatched on the DNR FalconCam

Four newly hatched chicks are now visible on the Minnesota DNR’s popular FalconCam (mndnr.gov/falconcam). The Nongame Wildlife Program’s camera is in a nesting box in downtown St. Paul and will once again provide an intimate look at peregrine falcons raising their young.

Spring turkey hunting season continues through May 31

Firearms turkey hunters who have an unused tag from an earlier hunt period can participate in the final hunt period from Wednesday, May 21, through Saturday, May 31. Hunters can also purchase a license for this period. Archery-only and youth ages 17 and younger are allowed to hunt during any period, including the final one. Hunters cannot purchase both a firearms and archery-only license.
