OF THE WEEK Submitted by Myrna Stölen Oatmeal Peanut Cookies 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 1 cup melted shortening 2 eggs 3 cup oatmeal 1 cup cornflakes 2 cup flour 1 cup ground peanuts 1 tsp soda 1 tsp vanilla flavoring Beat egg and then add sugar, and shortening and beat well. Add dry ingredients and stir in until fully incorporated.
CentraCare Dental Clinic to provide free dental care to children in need
CentraCare Dental Clinic at Rice Memorial Hospital is joining with dental professionals across the country for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) 21st Annual “Give Kids a Smile” day. This oneday event takes place on Friday, February 3rd and provides free dental services to children whose families face barriers to dental care. Services include free oral screenings, cleanings, fluoride varnishes, sealants, oral hygiene instruction, and family dental education.

Alright folks, how can fog develop when it is below zero? This winter has been so strange. I remember not too many years ago having to use a humidifier in the house in the winter because it was so dry. And this year it has been quite humid. I must admit that even the dead weeds in the ditches look lovely when the hoarfrost paints them a fuzzy white. And the trees don’t look so dreadfully bare with the frost covering them. Got a little nervous Friday afternoon when the breeze was shaking the frost from the branches. It looked like it was snowing. And that makes me very unhappy.

Junior High Knowledge Bowl team takes third
The Montevideo Junior High Knowledge Bowl team took home a 3rd place finish at the Super Regional meet at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall on Friday. .

Thunder Hawk girls defeat Melrose
Last Thursday evening, the Thunder Hawk girls defeated Melrose in a West Central Conference victory 57-19. The team was led by Avery Koenen who scored 22 points, while Kiera Foley and Tenley Epema each also added 12 points to the team total.

Guest column: Celebrating 22 years with gratitude
The New Year marks a big change for me personally and professionally. After 22 years on staff, I’ll be retiring from Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) in January. My heart is full as I look around southwest Minnesota and think of all the good we have been able to do together. I wanted to share a few of my favorite memories with you in parting.

2023 New Years baby arrives
CCM Health’s New Years Baby for 2023 is baby boy Declan Oliver Gimberlin. Declan was born on January 5th at 7:32 a.m. weighing 7 lbs, 2 oz and measuring 19.5 inches long. Proud parents of Declan are Brody and Greta Gimberlin.
