As we think about being thankful, I am thankful for a warm house and a place to call home. However, not everyone has this. I have been on the St. Martin’s Board, which is a committee that is supported by area churches to help those in need. Normally, we have donations around that $10,000.00 mark and use this to help people with housing, heat, lights, water and all those things that make a place home. We realized however that there is a bigger need and that is for Transitional Housing. We now have a committee of Montevideo residents working on the issues of homelessness. Now, you do not see people out on the street corner with little signs like in the twin cities, but we do have people living in cars and in warm open buildings at night and sleeping on friends’ couches. We have found working with Prairie Five that nearly every working day of every month they work with someone who is homeless or facing homelessness. We hope to help that as this community group moves forward.
