Around this time 20 years ago (August 30th, 2002) I was a new reporter at the Tri-County News in Cottonwood, covering a murder that shook Montevideo to its core. I remember distinctly receiving the call that a body had been found in the rural Hanley Falls gravel pit the local teens used to swim in.

A trip along the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway can include various portions of the scenic route, as in it’s entirety, the byway covers 287 miles along the Minnesota River, which was once one of the largest rivers in existence.
Legion Riders host annual Summer Fun Run
This past Saturday the Montevideo American Legion Riders hosted their annual Summer Fun Run. The event raises money for children of military service members for scholarships. This year’s event had 60 motorcycles and 75 attendees. With several area sponsors contributing cash and items for door prizes, the event was a success. Everyone enjoyed a pre planned destination ride and were treated to a supper prepared by Legion Riders and Auxiliary members. Rider event coordinators wish to thank all participants, gift sponsors and the Montevideo Fire Dept. and look forward to hosting next summer’s Fun Run. Photo Submitted
Troubles lead to inspiration to motivate others for Montevideo resident
Karl Wernecke, of Montevideo, is about to set off on an adventure, chasing a childhood dream after purchasing a gold claim in Idaho. He leaves on the 30th of this month for his new life panning for gold in the mountains, leaving behind a group of friends interested in hearing about his adventures after having heard his life’s story.
Chancey Williams brings 90s country/modern mix to Chippewa County Fair
Headlining the music acts involved with this year’s Chippewa County Fair is Chancey Williams, a country music star from Wyoming. Williams will be performing on Saturday, July 30th beginning at 10 p.m. after a performance by Great Frontier Bull Riding.
Marlyn Rud
Marlyn Rud of Montevideo died on Friday, July 15, 2022, at CCM Health in Montevideo at the age of 96. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at 1 p.m.
Yvonne Hilden
Yvonne Hilden of Milan passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022, at her home in Milan at the age of 77. Private graveside services will be held.
