Montevideo has not had a representative at the competition only a couple of times in the history of Fiesta Days, with most recent years being due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Montevideo’s representation returns with Fiesta Queen Tegan Marty heading to Minneapolis to compete against 36 other candidates for the title of Queen of the Lakes. Patricia Ann (Ree) Nasby
Patricia Ann (Ree) Nasby, 91, of Bloomington, formerly of Edina, peacefully passed away with her family by her side on Sunday, July 3, 2022, after a brief illness. Pat was born on April 9, 1931, in Granite Falls and was raised in Montevideo. Pat always referred to Montevideo as “the best place a person could ever grow up.” She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1949 and that summer she was crowned Montevideo’s Fiesta Queen and later competed in the Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes pageant. Pat went on to St. Olaf College where she graduated in 1953 and that is where she met the love of her life, Charles L. Nasby, Jr. (Bud). Pat and Bud were married in 1953 and they shared 36 wonderful years together until Bud’s death in 1989. After their wedding, Pat and Bud lived on Ford Island (Pearl Harbor), Hawaii where Bud was stationed as an officer in the Navy. Pat taught elementary school and she performed the hula with other spouses welcoming the incoming naval ships arriving on the island. Their eldest son, Greg, was born on Ford Island and that is when Pat began her lifelong love for Hawaii. With yellow being her favorite color, it makes sense that Pat loved the island sunshine and the Hawaiian sunsets. After three years living in Hawaii, Pat and Bud moved back to Minneapolis and eventually moved to Edina in 1961 where Pat lived for 57 years before moving to Friendship Village of Bloomington in 2018. Pat had a love for clothes and fashion and in the 1970s, she and two close friends opened Rosie’s Closet, one of the first women’s consignment shops in Minneapolis. After Bud’s death, Pat continued in retail and began a career working at Dayton Hudson/Marshall Fields/ Macy’s women’s department at Southdale where she eventually retired at the age of 77. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and followed Him throughout her life. Pat and Bud were long time members of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis. With her love for the arts, she was actively involved with Friends of the Institute at Minneapolis Institute of Art. Pat always had a smile on her face and she loved people. Her presence lit up every room she was in. Pat adored her family and her many friends and always looked forward to parties and celebrations. She was truly beautiful inside and out. Pat loved to spend time with Greg’s family in Canada. She was the proudest of her seven grandchildren. Pat rarely missed a grandchild’s baseball game, hockey game, or concert and was known by many around the Edina community as “Grandma Pat”. Whether it was at Target, Macy’s Southdale or a sporting event people would love to see her and say hello. Pat loved every person she ever met and will be greatly missed by all. Our loss is heaven’s gain. Aloha Pat! Including her husband Bud, Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ruth Ree. Pat is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Brooke (Captain Cook, Hawaii) and Tim and Kristi (Edina), her grandchildren Amber, Kai, Boe (Lila), Charles (Kristen), Jack, Cole, and Charlie, her sister and best friend Shirley Nilsen (Bloomington), her brother Ron Ree (Burnsville) and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Pat’s Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, August 11 at 11 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church (6901 Normandale Road Edina 55435) with visitation beginning one hour prior. The family would like to thank the wonderful residents and staff at Friendship Village of Bloomington, the loving pastors and members of Christ Presbyterian Church, and the special caregivers of Grace Hospice.

Prairie Notebook
Greeks called them Anopheles: “Good for Nothing”. In Spanish, their name translates to “Little Flies”. We know ‘em as mosquitos - “skeeters” if you will - those infamous, tiny, obnoxious, irritating, buzzin-your-ear, biting little (insert crude expletive here) pests of summer!
