Progress continues on Montevideo Veterans Home
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs sent an update to stakeholders this week about the progress on the Montevideo Veterans Home. In the newsletter, the MDVA notes that the Montevideo Veterans Home is scheduled to be open by the fall of 2023. Once completed, the Montevideo Veterans Home will be a 72-bed facility that will employ approximately 164 full and part-time employees. Those interested in future positions at the Montevideo Veterans Home are encouraged to sign up for the MD- VA’s newsletter which provides updates on the positions as they become available.

Let’s explore some of the agencies serving our area and the resources they have available. Despite their metro location, HOME Line and Minnesota Elder Justice Center provide service and advocacy across the whole state. In addition to the direct services they provide described below, they also have educational webinars (details can be found on the web sites given below) on related topics. I’ve learned so much from them!
Montevideo author to lead Cozy Mystery writing workshop
Montevideo author and writing coach will lead a writing workshop for all skill levels at the SW MN Arts Council annual artist retreat at the Danebod Folk School in Tyler. The description for the workshop reads, “Open the door to your imagination as we expose hidden secrets of murder, mystery, mayhem, and all manner of suspense in the workshop, How to Write a Cozy Mystery (and anything else)”. All artists are welcome to attend the annual artist retreat and encouraged to network with others while participating in a variety of workshops.
Friends of Upper Sioux State Park annual meeting held
At the annual meeting of the Friends of Upper Sioux State Park, Upper Sioux State Park assistant manager Emily Albin gave a report on the attendance at the State Park last year. “I always when people ask me about visitation and attendance do 2019 because that’s the year the highway failed and we had a couple of closures.
Montevideo council hears report on Public Works building floor issues
At the regular monthly meeting of the Montevideo City Council Monday evening, City Manager Robert Wolfington gave a report on the results of negotiations with the company that installed the flooring finish in the Public Works building. The floor was damaged shortly after moving into the building due to a gasoline leak that essentially melted the finish. For months, the City staff has been working with the company that provided and installed the product on a resolution.
Monte JV baseball team takes on Tigers
Montevideo JV baseball team traveled to Morris to take on the Tigers. The game started with Dan Gunlogson getting on with a single, from there Gunlogson stole second. Jace Goslee walked in the next at bat and both were moved over to third and second on a fielders choice but the Thunder Hawks couldn’t get a hit to get them across the plate. Montevideo held the Tigers in the bottom of the inning to keep it a scoreless game after one. In the second, the Thunder Hawks again got a runner to third and couldn’t push the runner across. The hawks got the tigers out one, two, and three in the bottom of the 2nd and the game stayed scoreless.

Thunder Hawks track and field teams compete in Sauk Centre invitational
Last Thursday the boys and girls track & field teams traveled to Sauk Centre for an Invitational, with the boys team scoring the second place title with a score of 129.5. Scoring from that event follows: Girls Team: 6th Place Montevideo 56.
DNR preparations for fishing season opener May 14th
Regional fishing reports available from DNR in preparation of fishing opener Anglers looking for local information before the Saturday, May 14, fishing opener for walleye, bass, northern pike and trout in lakes can gain local knowledge by looking at regional fishing reports from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The regional fishing reports include details about waters throughout each region and can be found on the DNR website (mndnr.gov/Fishing/ Outlooks.html).

Thunder Hawks softball team takes on Melrose
On Thursday, the Montevideo Softball team took on Melrose in a West Central Conference double-header at home. The team took a loss in game one 5-11, and again in game two 3-8.
