Local author publishes first book

Katie Stearns has been writing since she was a small child, never imagining that she would eventually make a career from her hobby. After she and her husband moved from Duluth to a farm between Clarkfield and Montevideo with their two young children a year and a half ago, Stearns began seriously working on publishing her first novel. “I never really thought that I would let anybody read anything that I wrote,” she says. “It was always a very private thing.” Stearns recalls in childhood, having her first experience with positive feedback from something she wrote from a sixth-grade teacher. “It was like oh I’m actually good at that. Ever since then I was always writing something – even if it was just in my head,” she says.

Faith Column: “Easter and Forgiveness”

John 20:19-20 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

City Council discusses summer pool dates, street improvement projects

At the regular mid-month meeting of the Montevideo City Council, one of the topics of discussion was the Montevideo City Pool. It was noted that the Park Board met on April 13th, recommending that the fees charged at the pool this summer be the same as they were in 2021. The proposed opening date for 2022 is to be June 6th, with the last open day being August 14th. The committee also requested that there be a free day for swimmers on Friday, June 17th as a part of the Montevideo Fiesta Days Celebration as has been done in the past. The proposals were approved, along with a transfer of $84,200 from the General Fund to the municipal swimming pool fund to assist in covering operational costs for the 2022 season.

Norby publishes eighth book in a series based in Montevideo

Arthur Norby was born on Christmas Day, 1937 in the Montevideo Hospital. Being raised in Montevideo, he carries many memories of what the town once was, recalling various elements of the community that no longer exist, such as the shoreline of the river being located much closer to downtown than it was today. It is those memories that inspired a series of mysteries set in and around Montevideo that he has penned over the years. The series, titled Tom Hall Mysteries, is comprised of seven novels with the eighth in production currently.

Nettingham travels to Boston Marathon, dedicates run to the local community

Shi-Quan Nettingham spent his first winter in Minnesota after moving from Las Vegas a little over a year ago running the frigid prairie to train for his long-time goal of running in the Boston Marathon. Nettingham, the Sports Director at KDMA, has been running for nearly 13 years, starting out with track and cross country in high school. It wasn’t his intention, originally, to become so involved in running, as at the time, basketball was his preferred sport. He says he used running as a way to stay in shape in the off-season, but soon discovered a love for the sport. “I kind of just fell in love with it. It’s a healthy lifestyle, and really something that became kind of an addiction,” he says.

From the Editor’s Desk

My son, who is currently stationed overseas, seems to have acclimated so much to his environment, he has a hard time with remembering what time of day it is in the United States. And so phone calls happen very early in the morning. Most often moments after I actually wake up. The early morning calls are the worst. While I’m an early riser, I’m not a functioning morning person. I need to recover from sleep with at least a good 15 minutes on the sofa with the dog and some coffee before anyone engages me in conversation. Alas, he calls and starts the conversation with “So how is your day?” Only to be met with “Dude, I literally just woke up. I haven’t had any day yet.” Every time, and yet it’s routine now.
