Minnesota West Community & Technical College hosts Dental Assistant information night

Minnesota West Community & Technical College will host a free zoom session for students interested in finding out information about the Dental Assistant Program on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. During this session interested students will hear from Minnesota West resource staff, Dental Assistant Program Instructors, Minnesota West Graduates as well as regional Dental Professionals.

Great Plains Natural Gas replacing natural gas pipelines in Montevideo

Great Plains Natural Gas will replace existing natural gas main pipelines and service lines in a portion of Montevideo over the next several months. The replacement project is an ongoing integrity management process to ensure the safety and reliability of the natural gas system. Through an evaluation, Great Plains identifies sections of pipe for replacement based on physical and operation & maintenance components.

Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council receives grant

The Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council Inc. (PIC) has been awarded $41,097 by the Otto Bremer Trust and $25,000 from the Southwest Initiative Foundation to provide a sequential, purposeful continuum of Career Exposure, Career Exploration and Career Experience activities for students in southwest Minnesota. As a school-to-career intermediary organization, the PIC serves as a single point of contact for employers and schools, with the goal to increase student’s and parent’s knowledge of local career opportunities and facilitate work-based learning opportunities. Southwest Minnesota offers amazing career opportunities for students, but many students are not aware of their local options. The PIC connects students with local employers and assists students in developing marketable experiences and skills needed by business. It is a great win-win, students become more informed and prepared for their career and it helps develop an essential talent pipeline of future workers for local employers.

Where, oh where did the warming weather go? We had a couple of days when the temps reached high 50s and low 60s and now we’re back in the single digits and teens. I don’t like this. And, even worse, the winds have been gale force. Gusts have almost taken me off my feet. Uff.

The phrase is used when we experience something we were not expecting – and in this fast-paced world of uncertainty, it doesn’t seem surprising that we are often blind-sided by the unexpected.

Chippewa Valley Youth Club works to provide youth with a safe place for activity

Around 15 years ago, a group of community members formed a committee to explore the idea of providing an after school program for parents in need of a safe place for their kids to spend time who were not yet old enough to be home alone. The program initially started as a branch of the Boys and Girls Club, but after some years it was determined that the cost of membership was too much, and so the group transformed to today’s Chippewa Valley Youth Club.

Jazz Concert at MHS features SMSU Jazz Ensemble

On Monday evening, the Montevideo High School hosted a Jazz Concert that included performances by the Montevideo High School Jazz Band as well as the SMSU Jazz Ensemble with guest drummer Allison Miller. The community was able to listen to the sounds of the SMSU Jazz Ensemble’s special guest drummer Allison Miller due in part to a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. Miller is a New York City based drummer, composer and teacher. She has been a three time Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department among being named best of in a variety of polls as a solo drummer and member of a band. She teaches at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, as well as workshops, and camps in NYC. The musical performance by the SMSU Jazz Ensemble featured an exploration of music by female composers, including numbers such as “Crystal Cove” by Patty Darling and “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue” by Lillian Hardin Armstrong.
